Lighting your hall and landing

Hallways set the tone for the rest of your home and should feel warm and inviting. A well-lit, well-decorated hallway can be a cheering anchor between rooms. When left dark and gloomy, a corridor can diminish the ambience of the rooms surrounding it.

You might think corridors need few lights but small spaces actually benefit from soft layers of light emanating from multiple sources to create a calm open feeling. You should choose a much lower wattage bulb than you would for a larger room – this will avoid overpowering the space or dividing it with harsh shadows.

Walkways generally need at least two meters (6’ 8") height clearance and you should think about this when installing ceiling lights. For lower ceilings, try flush fittings to give an even distribution of light without encroaching on the space below. If your property has very high ceilings, consider a larger statement pendant or lantern, which will feel proportionate to the space and create a more intimate atmosphere below. Long cluster pendants such as LIVIA and GALILEO are ideal for stairwells, giving an enchanting light display that links the two floors.

Where floorspace is available, a hallway table is a homely and practical addition for storing keys and post; choose one with a small footprint such as our DATA console table, which is only 25cm deep. A table lamp here will create a soft pool of light to display photographs and ornaments; add a mirror above to widen narrow corridors and open up the space. A mirror with a rose gold tint, such as our Anzio will feel instantly warm and opulent.

Wall lights are a fantastic transitional light source when placed at eye level and used in multiples; position them at equal distances along corridors or in-between doorways on landings. We generally recommend wall washers – they will not protrude too far into your walking space and cast light gently across the wall. For a calm evening mood, switch off your overhead lighting in favour of your wall lights.
