Saving on your lighting energy bills

Turning off the lights when leaving the room can result in energy savings, but in the darker months, when illumination is vital and brings visual warmth to the home, are there any other ways you can adapt?

What can I do to save energy?

The type of light bulb you use plays a big part in energy bills. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that a home using exclusively LED bulbs will save approximately £35 – £55 less a year in energy.

Switching to LED light bulbs that turn an existing light into an energy-efficient one is a quick and easy option. Given the current cost of electricity, if you can change even a few of your most regularly used bulbs for LED, then this can start to have an impact on lowering your energy use. We offer an extensive array of LED light bulbs – including the popular G9 LED bulbs, E27 LED bulbs, GU10 LED bulbs, E14 LED bulbs, G4 LED bulbs and, of course, dimmable LED bulbs.

Floor and table lamps are often used to set the mood in a room but what if want to keep these turned off and use the central fitting? Consider installing a dimmer function that will allow the light to go from task to ambient when you need it quickly. Modern dimmers designed for LED use actually save energy when the light is dimmed (in contrast to old ones, which just wasted the energy as heat).

Maximise light output

If you’re looking for ways to use fewer lights in your home, main fittings that are clear glass, crystal or cage designs will let the glow from your bulbs flow through your room unimpeded. Allowing a sole fitting to give you a fuller spectrum of light.

The Edmond pendant in polished chrome metalwork sparkles and has a clear ribbed glass shade. It diffuses the light beautifully whilst still giving a glare-free spread of light. Single pendants are versatile and can be used in lounges, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms, well, pretty much every room of the house. Use them singularly or arranged in a row or cluster to create the look you want. Pair with our powerful E27 LED lamp to complete the look for a perfect LED option. Add a dimmer to give you a full range of light options giving you a hard-working, energy efficient fitting with all round flexibility.

Our classic Midi range allows for a free range of light whilst giving a contemporary look. The single pendant looks great arranged over a petite breakfast bar or use several spaced down a hallway. The 3lt, 4lt and 5lt bar configurations are right at home over a kitchen island or dining table. Use the Rustika E27 LED or Globe E27 LED lamp and pair a dimmer to allow you to switch between a task and ambient setting on demand whilst being energy-efficient.

Use clever outdoor lighting

If you have an outdoor area which need illumination in the winter months, then a light with a PIR sensor could be a sound option. This type of lighting is especially useful for those tasks in the garden which may only need a few minutes of your attention but eliminates the need to remember to turn the light on and then off. Therefore, saving you energy by not having lights on unnecessarily.

The Tien is everything you need in an outdoor wall light. It’s made of durable die cast aluminum in a modern matt grey finish with a 180° adjustable head. The warm white LED is triggered with a PIR sensor, place by your doorway or walkway to provide instant light when most needed. You can set the amount of time the light will illuminate for once the sensor is triggered to suit your requirements.
